Moving From WooCommerce to Shopify Without Losing Your Rankings

The biggest fear in any replatforming project is the one nobody can see until it is too late: what happens to the search traffic. It is a justified fear, because a careless migration really can erase years of SEO. It is also an avoidable one. Here is the checklist we run on every WooCommerce to Shopify migration.

1. Inventory Every URL Before You Touch Anything

Your rankings live at specific URLs, and WooCommerce and Shopify structure URLs differently. Before anything moves, pull every indexed URL from your sitemap, Search Console and analytics. The pages you forgot exist are usually the ones quietly earning traffic.

2. Map Redirects One to One

Every old URL needs a 301 redirect to its precise new home: product to product, category to collection, post to post. Wildcard redirects that dump everything on the homepage are how rankings die. The mapping spreadsheet is tedious and it is also the single most valuable artefact in the whole project.

3. Carry the Metadata, Not Just the Content

SEO titles, meta descriptions, alt text and structured data all need to move with their pages. Standard importers regularly drop these. Whatever tooling you use, audit a sample of migrated pages against the originals before launch, not after.

4. Rehearse on a Staging Store

Run the entire migration against a development store first. Reconcile the counts: products, variants, customers, orders. If staging numbers do not match production numbers, launch day is not ready, and it is far cheaper to learn that in rehearsal.

5. Mind the Things Wired Around the Store

Payment providers, shipping rules, email flows and analytics all need their own migration plan. Pay particular attention to tracking: a migration that breaks your conversion events leaves you flying blind exactly when you need data most.

6. Watch Search Like a Hawk After Cutover

Submit the new sitemap immediately, then monitor crawl errors, index coverage and rankings through the following weeks. Small problems surface quickly and fix cheaply if someone is actually looking.

The Honest Summary

Migrations lose rankings when they are treated as a data export instead of a project. Treat the SEO workstream as seriously as the data workstream and there is no reason your traffic should even notice the move. We have purpose-built tooling and a process for exactly this.
