Custom Shopify Apps vs App Store Apps: When to Go Bespoke

The Shopify App Store is one of the platform's great strengths. Thousands of problems already solved, installable in minutes, for a monthly fee. So when does it make sense to build your own app instead? Here is the framework we use with our own clients, including the cases where we tell them not to build.

Stay With App Store Apps When

• Your problem is genuinely common. Reviews, email capture, upsells, loyalty points: these are solved problems. The good apps are excellent and cost less than an hour of development per month.
• You are still discovering what you need. An off-the-shelf app is a cheap way to learn your real requirements. Build custom after you know, not before.
• The app is core to its vendor's business. A well-maintained app from a focused vendor will track Shopify's changes faster than any one-off build.

Go Bespoke When

• The almost-right app is fighting you. If your team works around an app's assumptions every day, you are paying twice: the subscription and the workaround time.
• Your process is your edge. When the workflow itself is why customers choose you, generic software flattens your advantage into everyone else's.
• You are stacking apps to fake one feature. Three apps duct-taped together cost more than they appear: three subscriptions, three scripts on every page and three support queues when something breaks.
• The data flow matters. Supplier feeds, warehouse sync, trade pricing: integration problems are almost always bespoke problems, because your systems are not anyone else's.
• The numbers simply work. A custom app is an asset with a one-off cost. Stack enough subscriptions and the comparison does itself.

The Question That Decides It

Ask: is this problem common enough that someone built a business solving it, or specific enough that the solutions all almost fit? Almost is the expensive word. Six months of almost usually costs more than building it right.
